Triumph motorcycles have long been celebrated for offering approachable, engaging machines that riders can either grow with or enjoy for a less demanding ride. But how far can you push the envelope when tasked with building a track-ready flat tracker straight out of the box? Meet the FT93 Tracker 400.

One month ago, Amy Sparrow of Triumph UK challenged the experts at Stockwell Design and Triumph West London to find out. Their mission was simple on paper: customise a Triumph Tracker 400 and have it ready for UK National Flat Track Champion Jack Bell to ride at Greenfield Dirt Track during an exclusive UK press event celebrating the Tracker 400. There was just one complication; there would be no time for post-build testing. The bike had to work first time.

The project brought together Stockwell Design, drawing on a rich history stretching back to the legendary Stockwell Racing days, and Brian Harris of Triumph West London, whose extensive career includes racing and managing his own team in the UK Super Moto Nationals.

The Build Philosophy: Preservation and Purpose

Rather than taking the easy route of fabricating entirely new parts and changing every component, Charlie and Brian chose a more disciplined approach, deciding to maintain as much of the original Tracker DNA as possible and prove the platform's inherent capability. The chassis geometry was already close to ideal, but flat-track racing demanded some key adaptations.

A pair of 19-inch wheel rims from a 2019 Triumph Bobber were laced to Bonneville T120 hubs, providing the necessary clearance around the front forks and swingarm. These were wrapped in a pair of Mitas flat-track race tyres, courtesy of Pete Boast Flat Track, giving the Tracker the footprint it needed for the dirt.

The front brake was removed completely; a standard safety and tactical necessity in flat-track racing, where an instinctive pull of the front lever can quickly result in a face-first introduction to the circuit. With all braking duties transferred to the rear, performance there needed to improve. A Galfer wavy rear disc was paired with a T120 carrier and calliper, requiring only minor modifications to the swingarm. A custom brake hose was then created to bypass the now-redundant ABS unit.

Rider positioning was equally important. The rear brake pedal was swapped for one from the Scrambler 400 range. Its longer pedal and offset mounting position moved the setup further forward, carrying the right-side footpeg with it and allowing the rider full control of the rear brake when hurtling into turns with their body weight pushed forwards over the fuel tank.

For the cockpit, handlebars were sourced from the 2026 Scrambler 900, matching Charlie's preferred flat-track dimensions. These were mounted using adjustable Xtrig risers from a Triumph TF450X MX bike, cleverly allowing the team to retain the original clutch cable length.

Final-drive sprockets were selected through an educated calculation to deal with varying track conditions and rpm limits, paired with a D.I.D chain. To unleash more of the engine's high-rpm character and provide the soundtrack a flat tracker deserves, an S&S Cycles slip-on muffler was combined with a straight-through Tec Bike exhaust header.

Then came perhaps the biggest gamble of the entire build. The team decided to leave the stock suspension untouched. With the Tracker's chassis already providing a strong foundation, helped by a tighter yoke offset compared with other 400 models, Charlie and Brian wanted to see just how capable the standard setup could be when everything around it was prepared for the track.

Stockwell Racing Revisited

While the mechanical changes were driven by function, the team wanted to preserve the Tracker's original identity visually. The stock bodywork, saddle height and fuel tank already captured the proportions of a true flat-track motorcycle, so rather than replacing them, the bodywork was sent to Image Design Custom for a complete transformation.

It returned wearing a distinctly 1970s-inspired red, white and blue colour palette, finished with striking gold wheel rims. The final detail brought the story full circle, with the iconic Stockwell Racing flame across the seat cover, connecting the new Tracker 400 with Stockwell's own racing heritage. The bike was ready. Now somebody had to ride it.

The Day of Reckoning: Testing at Greenfield

The day of reckoning arrived on Tuesday, 22 September. As Jack Bell threw down the bike's first laps at Greenfield Dirt Track, builders Brian and Charlie waited for the verdict. With no opportunity for a shakedown beforehand, this was the first real indication of whether their calculations had worked.

First impressions were stellar. Jack was immediately happy with the control layout, which required only minor tweaks to the brake pedal height and tyre pressures. Assisted by George Pickering, respected flat-track racer and owner of Greenfield Dirt Track, who had spent days grooming the circuit ahead of the event, Jack headed back onto the dirt.

After a few initial laps to bed in the rear brake and get a feel for the machine, he began to push. Watching a freshly completed motorcycle perform for the first time under such a capable rider was an emotional moment for the team, but the results quickly removed any lingering nerves.

Within an hour, the team's custom FT93 was putting down lap times capable of securing a front-row start in the DTRA Thunderbike class, all while running on its original suspension. Fast, agile and sounding incredible, their Tracker 400 had exceeded expectations.

Press Day Debut

The following day brought the official Triumph UK press event, welcoming media, athletes and influencers to experience the new Tracker 400. After a three-hour demonstration ride on standard Tracker 400s through the Lincolnshire countryside, guests returned to Greenfield to see just how far the platform could be taken. Jack climbed back aboard the custom machine and demonstrated exactly what it could do on the dirt.

The performance proved impressive enough that even current Triumph Motocross and Supercross rider Tommy Searle was left wanting a turn. What had begun only a month earlier as a challenge from Triumph UK had become a fully functioning flat-track motorcycle capable of delivering genuine race pace. And it had done it without losing the fundamental character of the bike it started from.

What's Next?

Following the success at Greenfield, the FT93's story isn't ending at the dirt track. Triumph UK, LIND and Stockwell Design are planning a special Meet the Maker day at Bike Shed Shoreditch, where the custom Tracker will be unveiled to the wider public. The idea was sparked by Dutch of Bike Shed, who was at Greenfield to see the machine in action for himself. A date for the event is still to be confirmed.

And judging by the reaction to its first outing, there may be considerably more to come from Stockwell Racing's custom FT93. Following such a successful debut, discussions are already underway about how the project could be taken even further. With smirks on their faces and a glint in their eyes, Öhlins Racing has already been contacted, and the race calendar is being carefully reviewed... Watch this space.
